Put simply, we think that the secret to online retail success is having a clear proposition, which is different to what others are offering, and attractive to enough people to make a business of it.

If you don’t have a strong proposition, no amount of tinkering with the look and feel of your store, how it works, or investing in promotional activities is going to make much of an impact.

Of course, if you do, it will make a big impact. But we find that often this broader marketing foundation is overlooked and that is a problem. So, we think you need to get the fundamentals right first, before doing the other stuff.

We then focus on the following:

Target

Once you have a clear proposition you need to hone your marketing messages to attract the people most likely to buy your version of whatever it is you are selling. You need to appeal to that segment of the audience that values the way you do it, whatever ‘it’ is, the most.

Engage

When they get to your store, new visitors must find what they expecting to see. First and foremost, what you offered in your marketing messages needs to be the same, only more strongly set out. They need to see that they have come to the right store. They also need to feel you are a credible business and that they can trust you to deliver what you promise.

Convert

As a retailer, you need to take prospective ecommerce customers on a journey that ends up with them pressing the BUY button. At any stage, you can do or say something that will spook them. This is particularly so at Check Out, so how the customer journey ends require a lot of thought.
